"Nice way to relax and finish off the night!"
Submitted: August 12, 2012
After the Mumford and Sons concert came to town, they encouraged us to go to the Old Port and support local. So we went to a little grocery mart and then walked a little farther to this spot. The concert had major food vendor issues. I ate a pretzel at 2 pm so by 9:30 pm I was staaaaaaarving. He was just about to shut it down, but let us in! We got our food quickly. It was good and yummy! And the people were hustling and working hard. Super nice. We made some friends at a nearby table too! Nice way to relax and finish off the night! -- Jurassika via TripAdvisor

"The burger menu alone is worth the trip."

We came upon this place by accident (located near Casablanca comics) and was pleasantly surprised. The burger menu alone is worth the trip. The food was all good and reasonably priced. In addition, the service was perfect and everyone was very friendly.

Amazingly yummy. I had the veggie burger and it was easily the best veggie burger I have ever had. They make the burger hand made...not out of a box. The bread was fresh and fries were great! -- Dave P. via Yelp

We were looking for place for a late lunch after a visit to the Portland Museum of Art. We walked by the White Cap Grille and decided to stop and give it a try. I had a lobster roll and a pint, and lunch partner had a Reuben, sweet potato fries, and a glass of wine. The food was very good, and the service was excellent. We enjoyed sitting outside on the deck/porch and watching people passing by. Afterwards, we visited a couple of nearby galleries. -- Steve B. via Yelp

Had a nice business lunch, food much better than average. Best service in a casual setting in a long time. Server refilled beverages without asking, knew the menu, and chased us in the street because we forgot a doggie bag. -- Jim M. via Trip Advisor

"I highly recommend this restaurant...."

We had some time to pass before our flights departed and spent some time in Portland (highly recommend!). It was lunch time and we happened to park in front of the White Cap Grille restaurant. We noticed they offered outdoor dining and we had two small dogs with us. We asked if we could bring them to join us outside and not only did they welcome them, they brought a bowl of water over for them. Our waitress was very friendly and made great suggestions from the menu. The food was exceptional! I highly recommend this restaurant and will go again when I return to Portland. -- NcLuv2Trvl via TripAdvisor

From the service to the food - everything was absolutely amazing. Everyone was very happy and seemed to be really excited about working there. I was fully happy with everything we had and the wine selection is GREAT! They are doing Wine Wednesday - and we have been looking for a new place to have ladies night. Everything is reasonably priced and the food is beyond our expectations. OH and they have an amazing outdoor patio seating --- perfect. not too many places have nice outdoor seating in this area that we saw. -- LynnNewton via TripAdvisor

"This is worth the drive for!"
Submitted: November 18, 2011
My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of dining at White Cap Grille last Sunday night. The whole experience from start to finish was perfect, and just the type of meal we were looking for on a chilly night in Portland. We sat at the bar and were served by Ryan, a great bartender with a fun personality. We ordered the Lobster Risotto Cakes as an appetizer- delish- crunchy on the outside and creamy risotto on the inside. These are AWESOME! I had the Family Farms Burger and my boyfriend had the Chicken Confit. As much as I enjoyed my burger- the Confit- stole the show. Extremely tender and juicy with mouth watering flavors- and perfectly accompanied by super fresh veggies and mashed potatoes. This is worth the drive for! We ended our meal with the heavenly Maple Cremee Brulee- and I picked a martini off their after-dinner menu. Drinks, Food and a great atmosphere! This is a great place to go!! -- lobsterkmd via TripAdvisor

I've been here a few times and have never been let down! The food, service and drinks are really great. The margaritas and the sangria are both really good. The margarita didn't have cheap simple syrup that most restaurants use. Oh, and they have mini whoopie pies that they give out as a complimentary gift which is so unique and tasty! I will be going back! -- Nicole K. via Yelp

"Interesting choices, large portions, and great service"
Submitted: December 31, 2011
We stopped here for an early dinner and were seated right away. The beer selection was great - I had a Tuckermans Pale Ale and my companion had The Shipyard Export. What drew us to the White Cap was the variety of options. As a vegetarian I am used to having only one choice at restaurants featuring American food. At the White Cap, however, there were several choices. I settled on the beet and blue cheese salad and then a veggie burger with some amazing toppings. I had arugula, carmelized onions, and truffle mayo, but I think I could probably eat here ten times before exhausting all the delicious topping combinations. Oh, and did I mention that the veggie burger was homemade? Yum. My companion had the roast chicken with mushroom ravioli. Judging by the cleanliness of her plate, I would say she enjoyed it. Actually we both had extra food on our plates, but that was because the serving size was so generous. Since we only spent about $25 each for our food and drink, I would say the value was very good. The atmosphere was pleasant and the service was friendly and accommodating. The only drawback I can think of is the bathroom - it seemed kind of "eh." What we liked most were probably the choices, the large portions, and the responsive staff. We will try this place again the next time we are in town. -- mkmarcoux via TripAdvisor

Went for lunch and drinks and, to get out of the rain! Sat outside and Josh, our server, was very helpful suggesting an herb infused bloody Mary. It was delicious! "...a perfect night."
Submitted: June 15, 2012
Friends and I went to the White Cap Grille last night. There were 5 of us. We sat outside on their patio. It was a perfect night. The waitress was awesome. She was very attentive, and offered great suggestions. I was either going to have the lobster roll or The Peaks Island. The lobster roll was going to be my first choice, but the deal breaker would have been if they were to put it on a hot dog roll. To me, having lobster on a hot dog roll is like buying a 1 carat diamond and putting it on an aluminum ring. Anyhow, I asked the waitress about what kind of roll it came on. She said a hot dog roll. I said that was a deal breaker for me. She then offered that they could put it on another type of bread and offered putting it on ciabatta. Well all I can say, fantastic!! One of the best lobster rolls I've ever had. Everyone seems to want to make their lobster rolls with hot dog rolls. I think if White Cap starts making it with ciabatta, then they'll have something a little different, that tastes SOO much better. We all had drinks. I had a margarita. It was pretty good. A man came out with a tray of little tiny whoopie pies. I believe he was the owner. He said his wife had made these and offered us each one. They were delicious. I'm pretty sure this isn't a regular thing he does, but it was a nice touch. Anyhow, a great experience and we'll definitely think about going back. -- MaineTechieGuy via TripAdvisor

This is a relatively new restaurant among the plethora of eating establishments in this little gem of a foodie city, so I was keeping my expectations low. A friend and I were meeting for lunch and were wandering about the Old Port checking-out menus, and decided to try the White Cap. We have no idea what the name means. It's got mid-scale American food and pub fare, with a pleasant indoor atmosphere, though we opted on this nice weather day to sit on the outdoor balcony overlooking Market St. My friend had a beer and a chicken wrap variety of sandwich and fries. I went for an iced tea and a dressed-up pastrami sandwich with onion rings. We were both pleasantly surprised at the decent-sized portions, quality and tastiness of our respective meals. They will even serve your burger on a gluten-free bun if that is an issue for anyone in your party. Our server was friendly and competent. The prices were good, and overall it was an unexpectedly nice experience. We both said that we'd definitely go back again. -- James F. via TripAdvisor

"....the glory was my wife's bowl of Prince Edward Island Mussels."
Submitted: May 23, 2012
We stopped by ther White Cap Grille for lunch on Mother's Day before a whale watching trip, and found everything just wonderful - food, service, ambiance. Having maxed out on fried food for the vacation, I ordered a beet, walnut, and blue cheese salad on fresh greens. Everything was fresh, the walnuts lightly toasted, the cheese just "blue" enough -- beautifully balanced. But the glory was my wife's bowl of Prince Edward Island Mussels. Now, to say that she loves mussels is like saying Mario Batali loves pasta. Mussels are a transcendent experience for her, and she's often disapointed. But this was perfect (the best of four mussel meals on the vacation), all perfectly fresh in a light white wine, butter, and caper sauce. We ordered a half loaf of garlic bread so she didn't miss a bit of the sauce (and even without the sauce, the bread was delicioius! It was Mother's day, and despite the fact that we have no kids, the server brought her a complementary glass of sangria - not too sweet, as it usually is. I had a delightful glass of Viognier - nice to find that varietal on the menu. Ambiance was lovely, with jazz playing in the background, and the service was superb! Oronde (I'm spelling phonetically) was quick, friendly, courteous, and inventive. When we ran out of space, he brought in the next table for us, and when he saw I was walking with a cane, directed me to an upstairs bathroom so I didn't have to fight the stairs to the regular ones on the lower floor. An altogether satisfying visit, and we'll be back when we're next in Portland. -- KentheEnchanter via TripAdvisor
